Mutual Funds

A mutual fund are a collection of stocks, bonds, or other securities owned by a group of investors and managed by a professional investment company. Your money is combined with money from similar-minded investors. Mutual funds are popular because they make investing in financial markets easy. Funds invest your and other investors dollars in stocks and bonds. The investment objectives of the fund determine which of these securities the manager buys. Mutual funds are an excellent way to access the financial markets with minimal investment. They offer varying risks from low risk to high risk options depending on which fund you choose. Mutual funds are not guaranteed or insured. Past performance is not indicative of future returns. Consult your prospectus and fund fact sheets when purchasing new funds.

Segregated Funds

Segregated funds are an investment product sold by life insurance companies with insurance guarantees. Segregated funds are a valuable estate planning tool, and they may have something to offer business owners who want to protect investment assets from creditors. The funds come at a higher price in fees for the added protection.

ETF’s (Exchange Traded Funds)

An exchange traded fund, or ETF, is an investment that tracks an index, a commodity, bonds, or a basket of assets like an index fund. Unlike mutual funds, an ETF trades like a common stock on a stock exchange. ETFs typically have higher daily liquidity and lower fees than mutual fund shares, making them an attractive alternative for investors. ETF’s are more tax efficient than a mutual fund. A passive ETF may have more downside risk than a mutual fund during market downturns. ETF’s are traded like a stock. Bid-Ask spreads can widen greatly during the trading day.

Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GIC’s)

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a Canadian investment that offers a guaranteed rate of return over a fixed period of time, most commonly issued by trust companies or banks. Due to its low risk profile, the return is generally less than other investments such as stocks, bonds, or mutual fund. With access to over 15 trust companies and banks, Peak offers some of the most competitive rates compared to brick and mortar institutions.
